If you have been to any show in LA for the last 2 years chances are you seen the name Pawz One or (Pawz 1). One of the hardest working emcees in LA right now, Pawz keeps it thorough every time. Raised off Golden Era hip hop Pawz intends to keep it going with a fresh perspective and help from legends like Ras Kass to name a few. We sat down with Pawz One, check out what he has to say.
(RT) Where did your name come from.
What's the meaning behind Pawz1?
(P1)I got that name from graffiti. I used write that name and when I started rhyming it I couldn't think of a dope rap name so people just called me that haha
(RT) What was the first song you heard
where you told yourself, I wanna do that.
What was the motivation for you to start
rhyming?
(P1) I would have to say "the message" the way everything was so vivid and i could relate and that's all i wanted to do, get people to relate to me.
(RT) In this era of indie artist/labels. What
is your take on major labels. Do you have
any personal experience with a major
label?
(P1) I've never dealt with a major but im on a Indie in Europe called Below System. Shout out to them for pushing the new album "face the facts"
i've heard nothing but foul things about the majors though. as a kid it was always the dream to be on a major but once you get into the business you get to see all of the ugly thats behind it.
(RT) As an artist what is your goal with
your career? What's being a successful
artist mean to you?
(P1) I want to make my mark as a MC and put out good music of course but i know getting rich off rap is a fantasy. unless you are doing some pop garbage that they mass produce but even then those guys dont make much money either. I want to make money from my music and
turn around and invest it in other things so i can just do music for the love and not have to worry about the quarterly sales.
(RT) How would you define your style?
(P1) I would have to say i have a lack of a definitive style say like busta rhymes or someone like that. Im from LA where alot of styles originated
but i've always been open to just rocking whatever i felt. changing my rhyme patterns with the beats, my tone, delivery etc.
so i guys my lack of a specfic style is my style.
(RT) Who are the three artist that motivate
you the most. Like every time these artist
drop a song, feature or album you buy it
no questions asked?
(P1) I'd have to say E40, NAS and EMINEM for me those guys are at the top of my list.
(RT) What's you favorite song on the The"Face Facts album" why?
(P1) for me it "effortless" i know alot of people are feeling "officer down" and "mind power"
but for me its effortless. I always wanted to make a song like that with the scratch hook and just kinda talkin some shit lol
(RT) Give me your take on the LA
Underground scene today as opposed to
the scene in the late 90’s?
(P1) aw man this could take a while lol from what I saw and the things i've heard about the scene in the 90's it was definitely the place to be.
No one got a pass unless they had skills. people used to get booed! the scene now is dead thanks to pay to play and technology.
(RT) If there was a movie character that would perfectly describe you who
would it be?
(P1) thats ward to say because on any given day i could be "French" from the departed or "mickey" from snatch or the "comedian" from watch men.
(RT) What is you take on pay to play shows?
(P1) its the worst shit ever. it was never intended for hip hop. it started in the rock scene and someone in LA sold us out to the devil himself, Mr. sean healy. its been a steady decline since then. i can go on forever about it but i'll break it down like this. If anyone could sell 20 tickets and play
in a game with lakers how long would it take before the NBA is out of business?
(RT) If you could describe your style as a sample what would it be? (For example I
picked Bob James Nautilus - every time you hear it, it's just as dope as the first time you heard it.)
(P1) James Brown's "payback" the horns, the drums the concept. just the whole funk of it.
